I’ve recently been buying a lot of skincare with charcoal ingredients as I read up on how it’s a great way of deeply cleansing the skin and bringing oil and spots to surface. The carbon in the activated charcoal sticks to the dirt and oil in our skin and gets washed away when we rinse. This is great news for people with oily skin (me!) and those who have enlarged pores and blackheads. Here are my top picks from what I purchased:
Lush Coalface Cleanser // £5.25 for 100g This product’s fantastic for giving your skin a good old clean and the bar lasts ages. I use this mostly in the mornings when I wash my face to rid of any make-up that didn’t quite make the removal process the night before. I don’t know if it’s meant to but this bar has two sides, one smoother and one more coarse, which is great as you can decide how you want to clean your skin. Exfoliating shouldn’t be done every day so a smoother side is best used in between. The only thing I don’t like about coalface is the liquorice smell but I’ll live!
Lush Dark Angels Cleanser // £6.95 for 100g Dark Angels is a pain to use but the results are worth it. I use this in the shower or bath as it’s very messy, I found I spent longer cleaning the sink than I did cleaning my face! Again, just like coalface, this product lasts so long as it’s in solid form and you get a lot in a 100g tub. Grab a palm full, add water and really work this into the areas you get blackheads and blemishes the most. I sometimes wait a little while before washing off and do my hair. This is a deep cleanse product and brilliant at taking off face make-up. FYI Lush locally source their charcoal from Devon so even more reason to buy 🙂
Clinique Pore Refining Charcoal Solutions Mask // £23 for 100ml After reading lots of reviews about this products and the similar Origins mask I chose Clinique purely based on more positive user reviews. I’ve genuinely noticed a difference after using this and it’s non-irritant on my semi-sensitive skin. It doesn’t produce a strong smell and it’s very easy to put on and take off. Pop on the mask for 10 minutes, wash off and within 24 hours notice how it brings your impurities to the surface (yes that’s a good thing; it speeds up the process of getting rid of them!)
Sanctuary Spa 5 Minute Thermal Detox Mask // £6.67 for 100ml I’m aware Sanctuary have changed the packaging of this mask so beware it doesn’t look like this if you’re shopping for it. I love the warming gimmick of this product. It gets to work, heating up your skin almost instantly, and makes you feel like you’re in the spa. I probably wouldn’t buy this mask again, as I feel it doesn’t do a whole lot for me, I just like the self-heating aspect.
Charcoal Konjac Sponge // £8.99 This is my first insight into Korean beauty and I’m thoroughly impressed so far. This sponge has bamboo charcoal in it which is a natural antibacterial removing oil, dirt and hard to reach bacteria as well as restoring your skin’s natural PH balance (Konjac is an alkaline Asian tree). You can use this alone or with a cleanser (I use the Bioré cleanser below) and I feel it’s easiest to use in the shower or bath. It’s a hard sponge, which when run under the tap, becomes the texture of a normal sponge and dries hard again. The useful string means it can be hung in the shower. Using this with the Bioré cleanser gives the most amazing, clean feeling to your skin; you can’t beat it. Konjac do a range of different charcoal, clay sponges for face and body. They’re baby, man (charcoal is great for post-shaving) and even dog friendly. 100% re-purchasing!
Bioré Charcoal Cleanser // £4.99 for 200ml Bioré are well known for being a leader in charcoal beauty products with pore strips, masks and cleansers. I think this would be a great product for teens who are starting out with skincare as it’s easy to use, cheap and great value for money as the bottle lasts a long time. I love using this with my Konjac sponge to get the most out of the product and working it into the skin even further. I do love this product but it only helps draw out oilyness and impurities a little bit and I like it more for the fresh and clean feeling it gives my face. I recommend the cleanser for mildly oily skin rather than those who suffer from very oily skin.
I hope you gained some insight on some of the charcoal products out there! If you want to purchase any of the products listed just click on they hyperlinks on the price in the product description.
